PERRY HALL, Md. – The No. 16 Norfolk State bowling team finished the weekend with a 4-7 record at the Morgan State Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Brunswick Perry Hall Lanes.
NSU boasted a 3-2 mark in the first day of competition Friday in Baker play, defeating Elmhurst (671-620) and No. 18 Florida A&M (699-666) to open up tournament play. Losses to Howard, 778-694, and eventual tournament champion and third-ranked Nebraska, 862-665, were sandwiched around a 698-664 win over Saint Peter's.
The Spartans then slumped to a 1-3 record Saturday in team play before falling in both Baker games Sunday in bracket play. NSU lost its first three games Saturday to North Carolina A&T (813-810), No. 9 New Jersey City (913-896) and Long Island (887-871). After a bye, the Spartans rebounded to take down No. 12 Vanderbilt, 939-902.
On Sunday, though, NSU fell four games to one in Baker play against No. 17 Delaware State and then four games to two against Florida A&M to close out the tournament.
NSU saw its overall record fall to 58-41 on the season.
Individually, freshman Thea Aspiras led the way for the Spartans with an average of 195.8 in five games on Saturday, while junior Chelsea Krall also bowled all five games and averaged 186.8. Senior Tiffany Hunt rolled a 175.8 average in five games as well.
Junior Sheila-Marie Smith competed in four games with a 169.5 average, while sophomores Jessica Overton (179.7) and Lauren Graupmann (173.3) each bowled three games.
NSU will hit the lanes in two weeks at the ECAC Championships March 5-6 in North Brunswick, N.J., the last tournament for the Spartans before the MEAC Championships March 18-20.
