NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State junior Kyle O'Quinn was named MEAC Player of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, the league announced.
The 6-10 post player averaged 28 points, 15.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in the Spartans' two games last week. He tallied a career-high 37 points and matched his personal best with 19 rebounds in the 110-108, double-overtime win at Coppin State last Monday. The 37 points and 19 rebounds are the highest figures for a MEAC player in any game this season. O'Quinn, who also blocked six shots against the Eagles, hit the winning free throws with 4.5 seconds left in the second OT period.
Despite failing to score or grab a rebound while saddled with foul trouble in Saturday's first half, O'Quinn posted 19 points and 12 rebounds in the second half of the Spartans' four-point loss at Maryland Eastern Shore. It was his 10th double-double of the season and 20th in his career. O'Quinn also blocked two shots in the loss, giving him 64 this season. That broke Steve Gilbert's single-season school record of 63.
This is the second week in a row and third out of the last four that O'Quinn has won MEAC Player of the Week honors. He has also been named Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.
O'Quinn is averaging 15.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game heading into tonight's contest at Delaware State. In nine conference games, he averages 21.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per outing.
