NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team was unable to use home court advantage as visiting Delaware left the NSU Tennis Courts with a 7-0 victory against the Spartans Tuesday afternoon.
On a sunny weekday afternoon, NSU saw its record drop to 2-12 on the season, while the Blue Hens pushed their record to 6-4 overall.
NSU battled tough in doubles play, as juniors
Ben Marks and
Jonathan Sessom fell to Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Freshmen
Brian Bullock and
Kent Austin lost by an 8-5 score to Ryan Kent and Robert Kay at No. 3 doubles, and juniors
Arsenio Culver and
Christian Romanzini suffered a similar fate at the first doubles slot, 8-3, to Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov.
Culver came the closest to pulling off the upset in singles competition, but Scott was ultimately too much in a 6-4, 6-4, win over Culver at the No. 1 singles position. Beneck defeated Marks at the No. 2 slot by a 6-4 score in the first set before finishing the win with a 6-2 second-set victory.
Sessom and Bullock both lost by similar 6-2, 6-1 scores in their respective matches. Vorobyov defeated Sessom at the No. 3 position, and Kent downed Bullock at the sixth slot. In the other two matches of the day, Romanzini fell to Hincker at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Austin lost by the same score at the fifth singles slot to Jeff Marshall.
NSU will return to its home court Thursday against Chowan at 2 p.m.
