CARY, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team downed North Carolina Central by a 5-2 score Sunday morning at the Cary Tennis Center.
The Spartans won four of six singles matches and two doubles matches as they improved to 3-12 on the season. The Eagles fell to 5-8 overall.
Juniors Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks helped NSU take the early 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Jack Waissen and Trey Chatman. Freshman Brian Bullock and Kent Austin swept Johnny Brown and Christopher Mack at No. 3 doubles, 8-0. At the second doubles slot, juniors Christian Romanzini and Jonathan Sessom fell by an 8-6 score to Alejandro Espitia and Andres Perez.
Austin and Bullock posted easy wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, over the same opponents they defeated in doubles as NSU continued to roll in singles action. Austin defeated Brown, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, while Bullock swept Mack at the sixth slot, 6-0, 6-0.
Culver and Marks won at the top of the lineup, with Culver downing Waissen, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 slot and Marks taking care of Espitia, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. The Eagles prevented the NSU sweep by winning at the third and fourth spots.
At No. 3 singles, Sessom claimed the first set over Chatman, 6-3, but Chatman rebounded to take the next two full sets over Sessom, 6-3, 6-3. Perez, meanwhile, earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Romanzini at the fourth singles spot.
NSU will return home to host Chowan Monday at 3:30 and Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday at 3 p.m.
