NORFOLK, Va. – Brandon Snyder's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning accounted for the game's only run as the Norfolk Tides edged Norfolk State 1-0 on Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Despite strong storms earlier in the day and chilly low-50's temperatures at game time, the teams' second annual exhibition game drew 8,804 fans, some 300 more than last year's inaugural event. The fans witnessed a well-played, low-scoring affair in which the Spartans went toe-to-toe with the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
NSU right field John Lynch registered the game's first hit when he ripped a one-out double over Tides left fielder Nolan Reimold's head in the top of the first. Lynch stole third base, but was stranded when Tides pitcher Chris Jakubauskas got Brandon Hairston to fly out to deep center after a lengthy at-bat.
Chris Joyce had the Spartans' other hit, a lead-off single in the top of the second. But he was later erased on a double play.
Though NSU failed to get another hit, pitching kept the Spartans in the game. Tides pitcher Chris George pitched the first three innings for NSU, retiring all nine batters he faced and striking out four. Then it was the Spartans hurlers' turn, as Ryan Shook and Raymond Morton followed with consecutive scoreless innings.
But the Spartans' third pitcher, Ryan Davis, got into a jam in the sixth. He issued one-out walks to Tyler Henson and Matt Angle. After retiring Brendan Harris, Snyder grounded a single through the left side of the infield, easily scoring Henson from second.
Tides pitcher Clay Rapada also walked a pair of batters in the seventh, issuing free passes to Shane Hoggard and Cameron Parsons to give the Spartans hope for a rally. But Rapada struck out the next two hitters he faced to seal the win.
Snyder and Nick Green had two hits each for the Tides, who were limited to six hits overall.
Spartan pitchers combined to scatter six hits and yield just one run in their four collective innings of work. They also fanned three hitters. NSU's defense played errorless ball behind the pitching staff, including a double play turned by the infield and a sliding catch made by #M.J. Wells# to end one Tides threat.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday evening in a 6:30 p.m. game at Old Dominion.
