CARY, N.C. – The Norfolk State softball team made it 12 in a row with a 7-1 victory over North Carolina Central Sunday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park in the regular season finale for the Spartans.
NSU pounded out 13 hits and won its 12th straight game as the Spartans improved their overall record to 22-23. NC Central dropped its fifth in a row and fell to 7-37 on the season.

Casey Pomeroy struck out seven and allowed one earned run on three hits in seven innings as she won her seventh in a row and improved her record to 12-8. Junior
Whitney Holland hit 2-for-4 with three RBI, while junior
Danielle Wright went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Freshman

Candice Vasquez each added two hits on the afternoon. Kayla McPeek suffered the loss for the Eagles, giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits in five innings.
Wright got things going in the top of the first with a single to center field and scored with two outs when Holland lined a single past third base. The Spartans then increased the lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the second.
Vasquez reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, and back-to-back singles by Cortez and Wright brought home Vasquez for the 2-0 lead. Cortez came home when the Eagles unsuccessfully tried to throw out Wright stealing second, and another single by Boyd plated Wright to make it 4-0.
NSU then completed its scoring for the day with three more runs in the fourth. Vasquez got things going with a single to right-center field, and one out later Wright and Boyd also singled to load the bases. Valles hit an RBI groundout to bring home Vasquez, and Wright and Boyd came around to score on an error by shortstop Regina Diaz.
Ashanti Stroud hit an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth after Nadia Moreta had tripled to open the inning for the Eagles' lone run of the game.
The Spartans will head to Ormond Beach, Fla., for the MEAC tournament beginning Thursday. NSU will face either Coppin State or Morgan State at 1:30 p.m. in the opening round.
