CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by a pair of sprint victories from Sean Holston, the Norfolk State men's track team earned four first-place finishes this weekend at the Dick Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Holston won the 60 meters in 6.70 seconds on Friday night, then followed that up with a win in the 200 meters Saturday in 21.63 seconds.
James Taylor gave the Spartans a sweep of the three fastest sprints at the meet, as he won in a time of 48.61 seconds on Saturday. Taylor just edged Western Carolina's Benny Davis (48.70) for the top spot.
NSU's other win Saturday came from senior Josef Tessema in the 5,000 meters. He finished in 15 minutes, 14.88 seconds, nearly 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Evan Darm of Campbell (15:28.73).
Tessema and Taylor also formed half of NSU's second-place distance medley team on Friday night. In their first race of the year, the DMR quartet of Tessema, Taylor, Vincent Brown and Nathnael Meseret ran a time of 10:14.82, just behind victorious Duke (10:14.04).
Meseret also performed well in his solo race, placing fourth in the mile in a clocking of 4:19.17 on Saturday.
In Saturday's field events, Theo Duncan was runner-up in a season- best of 51 feet, 3 inches. Junior high jumper John James also posted a season-best in his event, placing fourth with a top height of 6-9.
NSU participates in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
