Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – Thanks to an abundance of 3-pointers, Hampton ran away from the Norfolk State women's basketball team in the second half in a 92-43 win over the Spartans Saturday afternoon in the Battle of the Bay at the HU Convocation Center.
The Pirates outscored NSU by a 53-22 margin in the second stanza and hit 13 3-pointers for the game on 35 attempts. Hampton remained unbeaten in conference play at 6-0 and ran its overall record to 14-3. NSU fell to 8-10 overall, 3-4 in the conference.
Sophomore
Rae Corbo led all players with 19 points, but other than senior
Tyisha Bridges with seven, no other NSU player had more than four. Junior
Recca Trice had team highs of seven rebounds and three assists.
Hampton used its suffocating defense to force 25 NSU turnovers, compared to just six for the Pirates. Hampton held a 32-1 advantage in points off turnovers.
Choicetta McMillian and Nicole Hamilton had four 3-pointers apiece and led the Pirates with 16 points each. Keiara Avant tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Jericka Jenkins did the same with 12 points and 17 assists. Alyssa Bennett also scored in double figures with 13.
Hampton hit 33-of-75 (44.0 percent) for the game, compared to 12-of-48 (25.0 percent) for NSU. The Pirates had 23 assists on their 33 baskets. NSU suffered its worse loss ever in conference play.
Junior
Batavia Owens hit the first two buckets of the game before Hampton scored the next 10 points to open up a six-point lead. Corbo nailed a trey and then added a pair of free throws and a layup at the 9:09 mark to cut the deficit to one, 12-11. Sophomore
Rachel Gordon then got fouled on the next possession going for the offensive board, and her subsequent free throws put the Spartans on top, 13-12.
An 8-0 run by Hampton, though, gave the Pirates the lead right back. Corbo nailed another 3-pointer, and then completed a traditional three-point play at 5:24, but Hampton hit five 3-pointers within a span of three minutes to open up a huge lead, 37-19. The two squads combined for just two field goals in the last three and a half minutes of play as Hampton went into the break up, 39-21.
Corbo had 13 points at the break to lead NSU, while Hamilton and Bennett tallied 11 and nine, respectively, for Hampton.
NSU didn't hit its first basket of the second half until Bridges sank a jumper in the paint at the 8:55 mark. NSU had just five buckets in the second stanza, although the Spartans hit better from the field percentage-wise than the first half. NSU was 12-of-14 from the free throw line, while Hampton connected on seven treys in the second half.
Freshman
Jazamine Gray scored her first collegiate points when she got fouled on her layup and made the and-1 with 17.9 seconds left in the game.
Avant led all players with five blocks and four steals. Ariel Phelps recorded 10 rebounds, as Hampton held a 44-39 edge on the boards.
NSU finished 17-of-20 from the free throw line, while Hampton converted 13-of-16.
NSU will be back in action at home next Saturday against Morgan State at 4 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
