NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State men's basketball All-American Ralph Tally will be one of six inductees this year into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's John B. McLendon Jr. Hall of Fame, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Tally, who played from 1983-87, is the Spartans' all-time leading scorer with 2,575 points, which ranks him fifth in CIAA history. His school-record 314 career steals are tied for second-most in league history. Tally was a three-time CIAA Player of the Year (1985-87) and three-time CIAA Tournament MVP (1984-86). He led the Spartans to a pair of CIAA titles in 1984 and 1986, and to a pair of NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region titles in 1986 and 1987.
Tally played just one season with the 3-point shot and hit a school-record 92 treys as a senior in 1986-87. Following that season, he was tabbed NABC Division II Player of the Year and a first-team All-American.
Other CIAA inductees in the 2012 class include: Winston-Salem State football player Donald Evans, Elizabeth City State basketball and track athlete Dr. Claudie J. Mackey, Virginia Union basketball player Warren Bruce Spraggins, Bowie State basketball and volleyball player Diedra Fields, the North Carolina Central 1950 CIAA men's basketball championship team, and former Petersburg Progress-Index and Richmond Times Dispatch writer Vic Fulp (posthumous). The group will be enshrined at a ceremony at 11 a.m. on March 2 at the Charlotte Convention Center during the league's annual basketball tournament.
