Eagles Tops Career Digs Record in 3-1 Win Over MSU

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles broke the school's all-time digs record, and the Norfolk State volleyball team continued to roll in this late season stretch with a 3-1 victory over Morgan State Friday night in the team's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night match at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU won its fourth straight by taking the match, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23. The Spartans improved to 6-2 in the MEAC Northern Division, solidifying their second-place standing behind league leader UMES. The win, the eighth in the last 10 matches, also pushed NSU's overall record to 10-18.

Because of Hurricane Sandy's approach to the East Coast of the United States this weekend, NSU's match with Coppin State on Sunday has been postponed to a yet-to-be-determined later date.

Just as important as the win was to boosting NSU's conference mark, the loss dropped fifth-place Morgan State to 3-5 in MEAC play, 4-18 overall. The Spartans now need just one more win or one more loss by the Bears to lock up one of the North's four berths in the MEAC tournament in November.

After senior Charlotte Armstead broke the NSU career records for kills and total blocks earlier this year, it was Eagles' turn in the spotlight on this night. Needing five more digs heading into the match to break the record now formally held by Kim Mumford, Eagles had six digs in the first set to pass Mumford's record of 869 set from 1992-95. Eagles led all players with 20 digs.

On the offensive end, the duo of Armstead and freshman Jessica Johnson carried the Spartans. Johnson totaled 15 kills on a .467 attack percentage with 13 digs, including an unheard of 10 kills on 11 swings in the final set. Armstead attacked at a .344 clip and also posted 15 kills, while junior Goda Jankauskaite joined them in double figures with 11 kills.

Samantha Prescott led the Bears with 16 kills and 14 digs, while Janelle Wilson and Zuri Smith each posted 10.

Two kills from sophomore Jasmin Flowers and a service ace from Eagles allowed NSU to take an 8-5 to start the night. Jankauskaite had three straight kills for an 11-6 advantage, and the Spartans went up by as much as six before the Bears began to cut into the Spartan lead. Morgan State got to within three points on three different occasions, the last at 18-15.

NSU, though, had an answer for each Bear point after that, and Jankauskaite added two more kills down the stretch to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead in the match.

After Morgan State won three of the first four points in the second set, NSU used a pair of kills from Flowers during a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. A service ace from Eagles a little later gave NSU a seven-point cushion, 13-6, but the Bears began to chip away at the lead. Down 21-18, Morgan State used a 5-1 run to go up by one, 23-22, and a pair of blocks by the Bears at the end tied the match at 1-1.

Morgan State handed NSU a 7-1 lead to start the third, as the first 11 points of the set came via attack or service errors on both teams. Armstead added a pair of kills to put the Spartans up by a 12-5 margin, and Jankauskaite and Johnson capped a 3-0 spurt a little later with a block for a 16-9 advantage. The Spartans went up by as much as eight before finishing the set.

Armstead had two more kills early on to help the Spartans go ahead by five, 6-1, in the fourth. Morgan State fought back despite Johnson's production and tied it at 9-9, and a 5-1 run in the middle of the set gave the Bears a 16-14 edge. Johnson had three kills during a 5-1 run to give the Spartans the lead back, 20-18, and she and Armstead each knocked down two more kills to close out the win.

The Spartans will be back in action next Friday at Howard.
