NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman forward Rashid Gaston of the Norfolk State men's basketball team was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon, the conference office announced.

The native of Warren, Ohio, posted 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting with 14 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist in a pair of defeats last week against national top-25 teams.

He added team highs of 12 points and eight rebounds in a 64-54 loss at No. 10 Illinois last Tuesday to go along with one block. He tallied 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist in an 84-62 loss on Saturday night at No. 25 North Carolina State.

On the season Gaston leads the Spartans with 7.0 rebounds per game and ranks fourth in scoring at 8.3 points per contest. He is shooting 41-of-79 (51.9 percent) with 10 blocks, seven steals and four assists in 12 games.

NSU (6-7) will be back on the court on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest at Iona.
