NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State erased a nine point deficit in the second half to come out with a 60-56 victory over Chowan at Joseph Echols Hall on Wednesday night. The win against Chowan snapped NSU's eight-game losing streak.
The Spartans improved to 2-8 and Chowan fell to 0-9.
Junior Aivah Parham netted a career-high 17 points to lead NSU offensively as sophomore Ebony Brown and junior Kashay Barnes added 11 points each. The Spartans were held to 33.9-percent shooting while Chowan finished the night at 35.2 percent from the floor. NSU outscored Chowan 30-18 in the paint.
The Spartans led by as many as 10 in the first half when Ebony Brown nailed a 3-pointer with 5:37 left before halftime to make the score 23-13.
A layup by Summer Curtis capped a 10-6 run for Chowan to cut the Spartans lead to six as Chowan trailed at halftime, 29-23.
Chowan started the second half outscoring the Spartans 14-4 as Janelle Murphy and Talaya Lynch each hit 3-pointers to give Chowan a 38-33 lead with 15:56 remaining.
The Hawks lead grew to as many as nine as Lynch drained another 3-pointer with 11:34 left in regulation.
The Spartans answered with a 15-5 run as Parham had seven points in the run to make the score 54-53.
Chowan regained the lead on another 3-pointer by Murphy. Barnes answered with a 3-pointer at the 3:17 mark to give NSU a 57-56 lead over Chowan.
The Spartans held Chowan without a point in the final 4:25 and senior Recca Trice was four-of-five from the line in the final 10 seconds to seal the win.
Talaya Lynch led all scorers and fell short of a double-double as she led Chowan with 19 points and nine rebounds. Janelle Murphy tallied 14 points and two steals. Chowan shot 58.3-percent from the 3-point line.
Trice had seven assists to give her 391 career assists and 59 on the season.
There were 12 lead changes in the game.
NSU will return to action on Dec. 28 when they take on Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena in the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The game begins at 7 p.m.
