Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Fans ready to start their holiday celebrations with a Sunday matinee basketball game were instead treated to a track meet at Iona's Hynes Athletic Center between the Gaels and the Norfolk State men's squad.
Iona's fast-paced offense tallied 34 field goals, including 10 3-pointers, and hit the century mark exactly in a 100-72 victory over the Spartans. The Gaels out-rebounded NSU by more than 20 and held a big advantage at the free throw line to drop NSU to 6-8 on the year.
Lamont Jones and David Laury, the latter who was playing just his second game of the season, led the way for the Gaels with 24 and 20 points, respectively, on a combined 14-of-24 shooting. Iona had just six more field goal attempts than NSU and made two less 3-pointers, but the Gaels hit 34-of-67 (50.7 percent) for the game while continuously getting up and down the court.
NSU, on the other hand, made 26-of-61 (42.6 percent). The two teams were nearly even from beyond the arc, with the Spartans hitting 12-of-30 and the Gaels shooting 10-of-29.
The Spartans, though, were unable to stay out of foul trouble against the athletic Gaels, sending them to the line 27 times, including 21 in the second half alone. Iona (6-5) converted 22-of-27 for the game from the charity stripe and also held a 47-26 edge on the boards.
It marked the first time the Spartans gave up 100 points in a regulation game since New Mexico scored 107 in a victory over NSU on Dec. 28, 2006.
Junior
Pendarvis Williams led the Spartans with 15 points, while freshman Rashid Gaston and junior Zieyik Estimè added 13 and 12, respectively.
Iona jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first five and a half minutes of the game, capped by a 3-point play from Laury and a layup from Jones just 10 seconds later. Junior
Malcolm Hawkins ended the run with a trey from the left corner, but the Gaels began attacking the rim and eventually went up by 10, 23-13, on another Laury layup with 10:38 to go.
After Williams hit treys on back-to-back possessions, the Gaels used a 10-0 run over a four-minute stretch to take a 16-point advantage, 35-19, at the 5:31 mark. The next two times down the court for NSU, junior
Marese Phelps drove to the hole for two and a hit a deep 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down. Iona then pushed the lead to 17 a little less than two minutes later.
The Gaels shot better than 51 percent in the first half and went into the break holding a 14-point edge, 45-31. Laury had 12 points and Jones and Taaj Ridley each added eight.
Gaston converted a couple of layups to keep NSU within 14 early in the second half, but Jones and Laury scored 11 straight points for the Gaels to keep the lead in the mid-teens. A pair of 3-pointers from both Williams and Estime helped keep Iona from extended the lead past 19 as the latter half of the second stanza ticked away.
A 17-2 Iona run that lasted exactly three minutes, though, stretched the lead to 30 and essentially put the game out of reach.
Sean Armand and Tavon Sledge each added 12 points for the Gaels, while Jones, Tre Bowman and DaShawn Gomez each had five of Iona's 24 assists on the day.
Hawkins and Phelps added nine and eight points, respectively, while junior
Jamel Fuentes added six points, five assists and four rebounds.
Following the short break, NSU will head down to East Carolina to take on the Pirates Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
