CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Simone Egwu led the way with 16 points and four rebounds as the University of Virginia women's basketball team defeated Norfolk State, 66-23, Friday night at the Cavalier Classic in John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers improved to 7-4 and the Spartans fell to 2-9.
Sophomore Quineshia Leonard led NSU with nine points and a career-high 18 rebounds. The Spartans only shot 22 (11-of-50) percent from the field en route to the lowest point total in school history.
Virginia got on the board first with a pair of free throw shots by Egwu with 19:39 remaining in the first half.
The Spartans finally answered with a layup by Leonard with 16:40 remaining as the Cavaliers led, 4-2.
China Crosby nailed a 3-pointer with 8:06 left before halftime to cap a 15-0 run for the Cavaliers as they continued to lead NSU, 25-4.
Leonard's layup with 6:57 left before halftime would be the final time the Spartans would score in the first half as they trailed, 25-6.
Faith Randolph's made a free throw with 32 seconds left to send the Cavaliers into halftime with a 32-6 lead. This was the second time this season NSU failed to score at least 20 points in a half.
The Spartans came out hot in the second half with back-to-back layups by Recca Trice and Leonard to make the score 32-10 with 18:48 left in regulation.
The Cavaliers capped a 15-1 run with a layup by Jaryn Garner with 12:26 remaining to lead NSU, 47-11.
The Spartans scored their last field-goal of the half with a layup by Jazamine Gray with 1:06 on the clock to make the score, 64-23.
Virginia had three players reach double-digit point totals in the game as it was a collective effort in the win. As a team, Virginia was 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the field and 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the free throw line.
The Spartans will face Northern Illinois on Dec. 29 in the third place game of the Cavalier Classic. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
