NORFOLK, Va. – The senior duo of Ben Marks and Arsenio Culver picked up their second win in as many matches in doubles play during the Norfolk State men's tennis team's 7-0 loss to Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Marks and Culver earned the victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, over the ODU pair of Can Cetinel and Fahoum Fahoum as the Monarchs improved to 1-3 on the year. NSU, playing its fifth match in 12 days to open the season, fell to 0-5 overall.
In singles play, Culver nearly earned the victory at the No. 2 position as well, as he faced Carlos Lopez-Villa and won the first set, 6-4. Lopez-Villa came back for a 6-4 win in the second set and then downed Culver in the third-set tiebreaker, 15-13.
Marks, meanwhile, dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Muzalewski Krzysztof at the No. 1 singles spot, while freshman Igor Braga fell by the exact same score to Fahoum at the third singles position. Senior Christian Romanzini met Alfredo Rodriguez at the fourth slot, where he lost by a 6-0, 6-1 score to his ODU opponent.
In the other two singles bouts, Wesley Barrett took down NSU freshman Daniel Grauel, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, while Cetinel earned the victory at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3, over senior Roosevelt Cooper.
In the other doubles matches, Braga and Romanzini fell to Barrett and Krzysztof, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot, while Grauel and freshman Shaheed Mourillon-Swift dropped an 8-2 decision to Rodriguez and Lopez-Villa at the third doubles position.
Both the NSU men and women will next face rival Hampton Friday at noon at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News.
