FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – School records continued to fall and several more season-best finishes were recorded as the Spartan men's track team capped a stellar weekend at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday.
Josef Tessema set yet another school record Saturday, this time in the 3,000 meters. He placed eighth out of a field of 37 runners with a time of 8 minutes, 16.10 seconds. That betters his own 3,000m school record of 8:26.95, set in December at CNU, by more than 10 seconds. Fellow senior Philemon Kimutai also broke the previous school standard with his time of 8:17.71, good for 10th place Saturday.
Tessema's performance marked the third indoor school record set by NSU over the weekend, following the performances by Sean Holston (400 meters – 46.54) and Keith Nkrumah (60m hurdles – 7.77) on Friday.
Holston and Nkrumah teamed with Kenneth Smith and James Taylor to place second in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet won its heat in a season-best time of 3:10.66, more than a second better than its own MEAC-leading pace. NSU finished only behind Georgia, which won its heat in 3:09.62.
Nkrumah capped his own strong weekend by placing sixth in the finals of the 60 hurdles in 7.81 seconds. The finals field was comprised of some of the top hurdlers in the nation, all from SEC, ACC, Big 10 or Big 12 schools.
Also Saturday, junior John James set an indoor PR in the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 11 inches and finished 10th in the invitational section of the high jump.
In his only individual event of the weekend, Taylor ran a season-best time of 21.31 seconds in the 200 meters, tying for ninth place out of 63 runners.
The Spartans next turn their sights to the MEAC Indoor Championship next Thursday through Saturday in Landover, Md. They will be seeking their seventh straight indoor crown.
