ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior
Arsenio Culver earned a three-set win at the top singles spot during the Norfolk State men's tennis team's 6-1 loss to South Carolina State Sunday morning at the SCSU Tennis Courts.
The Bulldogs earned a key conference win and improved their overall record to 8-2, including 2-1 in the MEAC Southern Division. NSU saw its record drop to 4-9 overall, 1-2 in conference play.
Culver handled Tomas Bizon at the No. 1 position by a 6-2 score in the first set before Bizon won the second, 6-2. Culver regrouped to win the third set, 6-2, for NSU's only win on the afternoon. Culver and senior
Ben Marks dropped their match at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, to Peteris Vinogradous and Artemiy Nikitin.
Marks gave Dmytro Kovalevych a run for his money at the No. 2 singles spot before ultimately falling short in the first set, 7-6, including a 7-1 loss in the tiebreaker, followed by a 6-4 win for Kovalevych in the second set. Kovalevych and Anton Protsenko also won in doubles at the No. 2 slot over senior
Christian Romanzini and sophomore
Kent Austin, 8-0.
In the other doubles match, freshmen
Igor Braga and
Shaheed Mourillon-Swift fell by an 8-4 score to Bizon and Jung Lee at the No. 3 spot. Braga also fell short at No. 3 singles to Protsenko, 6-3, 6-1, and Mourillon-Swift lost his No. 6 match to Young Kwan Lee, 6-1, 6-1.
The Bulldogs also won the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, with Vinogradous posting a 6-3, 6-2, win over Romanzini at the No. 4 position. Freshman
Daniel Grauel was unable to pull out the win over Nikitin at the fifth spot in a 6-3, 6-2 loss.
The Spartans will take a week off before getting back on the court next Saturday for three matches at the NSU Tennis Courts. NSU will face rival Hampton at 10 a.m., followed by a pair of matches against UMES right after.
