NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up a pair of easy wins Sunday at the NSU Tennis Courts, downing UMES in back-to-back matches, 6-0 and 4-0, to improve to 4-8 on the season.
The Spartans kept the Hawks winless on the season at 0-8 thanks to some dominating performances on the court. NSU won all nine singles matches contested over the two matches against UMES, including seven by 6-0, 6-0 scores, as well as both doubles matches played in the first match.
The Spartans got things going in the late morning on Sunday in doubles play, as senior Naeemah Brooks and junior Rebecca Graff earned an 8-2 win over Solana McMillan and Shamara McKenzie at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Maryna Kariuk and freshman Laura Gutierrez easily handled Arshelle Jackson and Raveena Sharma at the second doubles slot, 8-0.
Brooks took care of McMillan in singles play at the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-0, while Gutierrez helped NSU continue its hot streak at the second position, 6-0, 6-0, over McKenzie. Graff, Kariuk and freshman Kia Batiste all won their matches against the Hawks by the same 6-0, 6-0 score.
Graff handled Jackson at the No. 3 position, while Kariuk upended Sharma at the fourth spot. Batiste kept the sweep parade going with a victory at the fifth singles slot over Alisia Belt. The teams did not contest the sixth position.
The two squads turned right around and played again, with the first to four points declared the winner. It did not take long for the Spartans to get to those four points in singles action, as NSU won three of the four matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores again.
Brooks defeated McKenzie at the No. 2 position by a perfect sweep, while the same went for Batiste at the No. 3 slot against Jackson. Graff continued NSU's solid play with a sweep of Sharma at the No. 4 slot. Gutierrez also was victorious in a 6-2, 6-2 win over McMillan at the top slot.
NSU will return to the courts Tuesday at Virginia State. The Spartans will play Virginia Union in a neutral-court match at 10:30 a.m., followed by host Virginia State at 3 p.m.
