MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A trio of experienced veterans led the way for the NSU men as they opened the 2012 outdoor track season last weekend at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University.
Seniors
Aramis Massenburg and
Sean Holston and junior
John James all notched top-five finishes in their respective events to pace the Spartan men. Massenburg, a redshirt senior who did not compete during indoor season and was making his 2011-12 Spartan debut, placed second overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the 110-meter hurdles. After cruising to a time of 14.30 seconds in the prelims, Massenburg ran a 14.01 in the final, second only to former South Carolina All-American Johnny Dutch (13.86).
Holston, fresh off earning All-American honors in the 200 meters during indoor season, picked up where he left off. Holston ran a time of 20.85 seconds to place third. James, meanwhile, cleared 6 feet, 8.75 inches to finish fourth in the high jump.
Other top 10 finishes were turned in by junior
James Taylor in the 400 meters (eighth place, 48.06 seconds), freshman D'Sean Brown in the long jump (ninth, 21-11.5) and senior
Theo Duncan in the shot put (10th, 49-9.75).
The Spartans will be idle this weekend before returning to the track at the Raleigh Relays on March 30-31.
