MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team picked up another non-conference victory with a 9-0 sweep of Chowan Thursday afternoon at the Chowan Tennis Complex.
The victory allowed the Spartans to move past .500 overall on the season at 10-9 heading into the stretch run of the season. Chowan dropped to 6-13 on the year.
The day started with NSU taking a 3-0 lead in doubles play. At the top spot, senior
Arsenio Culver and freshman
Igor Braga defeated Danilo Galovic and Adam Moneypenny, 8-3, while freshman
Daniel Grauel and senior
Roosevelt Cooper also won by an 8-3 score over Sasha Kirsanov and Bjorn Blythe at the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore
Kent Austin and freshman
Shaheed Mourillon-Swift did even better, pulling out an 8-1 win over Jaqwese Williams and Andrew Parker at the No. 3 slot. Austin also saw action in singles play at the fourth spot, where he earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Blythe.
Cooper defeated Williams by a 6-1, 6-0 score at the No. 5 slot, while junior
Dexter McDowell posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory against Parker at the sixth position. Slotted in the No. 2 position, Braga had an easy time against Kirsanov, 6-1, 6-0.
In the other two matches, Grauel posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Galovic at the third spot, while Culver handed Moneypenny a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the No. 1 position.
The Spartans will host Delaware next Tuesday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at the NSU Tennis Courts.
