Game 2 Box Score

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Ryan Montgomery went 5-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI, and starting pitchers Jordan Egan and Ryan VanAssche both allowed just one earned run to lead the Spartan baseball team to a 10-3, 11-5 sweep of host Coppin State on Sunday at the Bachman Sports Complex. In the process, NSU increased its winning streak to seven straight and improved to 8-12 overall, 5-3 in the MEAC.

Montgomery matched his career high with four hits in game one. He also doubled twice, knocked in three and scored three times in the opener.

The Spartans jumped on the Eagles (0-20, 0-2 MEAC) with a four-run top of the first. Montgomery had an RBI single and Shane Hoggard a two-run double to highlight the scoring for NSU.

The Eagles picked up a run with three straight two-out hits in the bottom of the first, plating a run on Zach Spahn's RBI single to get within 4-1.

But NSU scored the game's next six runs to take control. Cameron Day hit an RBI single in the fourth, while Montgomery hit a two-run double and Rafael Colon added a run-scoring single in NSU's three-run sixth.

That was more than enough for Egan (1-2), who earned his first win of the year. He did not allow a run and yielded just three more hits in his final five innings of work. He struck out a season-high eight hitters.

Ben Jarboe (0-7) took the loss for CSU, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned) in five innings.

Colon was 3-for-4 and James Taylor went 2-for-4 in game one for NSU. Jesse Savage and Alex Brown had three hits each for the Eagles.

In game two, NSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after its first two innings at bat. Day stroked an RBI double in the Spartans' three-run top of the first. The Spartans added two more in the top of the second thanks to a CSU error.

But the Eagles struck back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the second thanks to four hits and two NSU errors. Four of the five runs that scored were unearned. Brown had the big hit in the inning, a two-out, two-run double off of VanAssche.

NSU regained the lead with three more in the top of the third and wouldn't trail again. Chris Warren and James Essex both singled and later scored on an Eagles' error. Colon capped the rally with a sacrifice fly as NSU finished with a season-high 11 runs scored.

Essex added a two-run single in the fourth, and Montgomery had a run-scoring single in the seventh for NSU's final runs.

VanAssche (2-3) and reliever Richie Salter combined to hold the Eagles scoreless over the final five innings. VanAssche allowed five hits and five runs – just one earned – in five innings of work to earn a win in his second consecutive outing. Salter pitched a perfect final two innings, striking out four of the six hitters he faced.

Day was 3-for-5, Essex was 2-for-4 and Taylor was 2-for-5 in the nightcap. Day and Taylor finished the day with four hits apiece while Colon was 3-for-6 with four runs scored.

Brown was 1-for-3 in game two for the Eagles, who finished with just five hits in the contest. Spahn (0-3) allowed six hits and eight runs, one earned, in 2.1 innings to take the loss.

The Spartans look to keep their winning streak going with a 6 p.m. game at cross-town foe Old Dominion on Wednesday.
