BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior
Josef Tessema broke his own school record in the mile run and junior
Keith Nkrumah tied his in the 60-meter hurdles to pace the Spartan men's track team on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier.
Tessema finished third in the mile in 4 minutes, 7.82 seconds to place third. That time is two seconds faster than his own school record set in February at the Tyson Invitational. Virginia Tech's Eddie Judge and Grant Pollock finished first and second, respectively, edging Tessema by less than half a second. Junior
Kameron George also ran a PR in the mile, finishing 15th (4:21.31).
Nkrumah matched his own school record in the 60 hurdles with a semifinal time of 7.77 seconds. He finished fifth in the finals in a time of 7.96.
NSU picked up two victories on Saturday:
Sean Holston won the 60 meters in 6.69 seconds, and
VIncent Brown won the 800 meters in a season-best time of 1:53.87.
Saturday marked the final opportunity for athletes around the nation to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which are next Friday and Saturday in Boise, Idaho. Holston has already qualified automatically in the 200 meters and ranks second in the nation with a time of 20.68 seconds. Nkrumah is awaiting a possible at-large bid in the 60 hurdes - he is tied for 15th nationally in that event.
