FARMVILLE, Va. – Host Longwood rallied from late-inning deficits in both games to sweep a doubleheader from Norfolk State by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 on Wednesday at Bolding Stadium.

The Spartans (1-9) have now lost nine in a row, six of which have come by one run, including the last three.
NSU held a 3-2 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game one, but Robby Newman hit a two-run double to give LU the walk-off win. In game two, Justin Lacy hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the Lancers (9-3) to a 2-1 victory.

In the opener, Longwood scored once in the first and once in the third to take a 2-0 advantage. But the Spartans clawed back to eventually take the lead. Rafael Colon started the rally with a two-out RBI double to cut NSU's deficit in half in the sixth. In the eighth, Colon walked and scored on a two-out Longwood error to tie the game at 2-all.

In the ninth, Ryan Montgomery gave the Spartans their first lead with an RBI single. But Longwood escaped without further damage when Montgomery was thrown out at home plate following a double by Cameron Day, and Colon grounded out to end the inning with two runners on base.

In the bottom of the ninth, NSU reliever Chris Horne retired the first two Lancer hitters. But he then walked Travis Biddix and hit Scott Burkett with a pitch. Newman followed with the game-winning hit to right center.

Ryan Schubert (2-0) got the win for Longwood despite allowing three hits and one run in 1.2 innings. Horne (0-2) took the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in 3.2 innings. Horne fanned five.

Colon and Chris Warren went 2-for-4 in the opener for the Spartans.

Game two was another tight, low-scoring contest. NSU scratched across a run in the third. Freshman outfielder James Essex singled and advanced to second when James Taylor walked. The two then executed a double-steal. Essex scored from third on a fielder's choice by Montgomery.

The 1-0 lead would hold until the sixth inning. Brandon Delk led off with a single off Spartan reliever Jeff Di Fulgo and scored when Lacy hit a two-run homer to right.

Longwood reliever Zach Jordan (1-1) worked around a single and stolen base by NSU first baseman Ross Cardwell in the seventh and final inning to close out the Spartans. Jordan picked up the win with three scoreless innings of work and four strikeouts.

Di Fulgo (0-3) allowed three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings of work, suffering the loss. Horace Smith started the game and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, but took a no-decision.

Essex was 2-for-3 and Hunter Kenney went 2-for-2 in the nightcap for NSU. Lacy, Newman and Burkett had three hits each in the doubleheader for Longwood.

The Spartans open MEAC play this weekend when they host Northern Division preseason favorite Delaware State. The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
