Longwood Match Results | FAMU Match Results

NORFOLK, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the previous two days, falling to Longwood on the road by a 7-0 score on Wednesday before coming up short against Florida A&M Thursday at the NSU Tennis Courts, 6-1.

Freshman Laura Gutierrez picked up the lone singles win against the Rattlers as NSU fell to 1-1 in MEAC play and 2-6 overall following the two contests. FAMU improved to 3-1 in the conference standings and 3-6 overall, while Longwood ran its record to 2-6 on the season as well.

Gutierrez defeated FAMU's Britney Dean, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2 singles on Thursday to prevent the Rattler sweep. FAMU, though, won every other singles match in straight sets.

Freshman Kia Batiste gave Elyisa Ortiz a run for her money in the first set at the No. 5 singles spot, but after Ortiz won that first set, 7-5, she cruised to a 6-0 win in the second. Senior Naeemah Brooks competed at the top spot in the lineup, where she fell to Kathline Durden, 6-0, 6-3.

In the other two singles bouts, junior Rebecca Graff lost to Alexis Brown, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 position, while sophomore Maryna Kariuk succumbed to Bethany Holt at the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 6-1. Kariuk also dropped her match at No. 2 doubles with Gutierrez, 8-6, to Holt and Ortiz. Durden and Brown won at the No. 1 doubles position, 8-3, over Brooks and Graff.

Because of NSU's five-player lineup, both Longwood and Florida A&M won the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches by default.

Against Longwood on Wednesday at the Lancer Courts, the Spartans dropped all five singles matches in straight sets, while the Lancers also dominated in doubles action. Longwood won at No. 1 doubles over Gutierrez and Kariuk, 8-0, behind the play of Malin Allgurin and Allison Shulman. Marta Pinyol and Sarah Moomau downed Brooks and Graff at the No. 2 position, 8-2.

In singles play, Pinyol against defeated Brooks at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2, while Shulman was victorious at the second position, 6-2, 6-3, against Gutierrez. Allgurin took care of Graff by a 6-0, 6-1 margin at the No. 3 position, while Moomau knocked off Kariuk at the fourth spot, 6-2, 6-0.

Batiste dropped her fifth singles match to Nicole Parker, 6-2, 6-0.

The Spartans will look to bounce back Friday against North Carolina Central in a key conference matchup at 1:30 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Courts.
