NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State recently inducted 17 of its student-athletes into the University's inaugural class of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.
Chi Alpha Sigma is the first national scholar-athlete society to honor collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes varsity athletes who have maintained a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and/or senior years.
The inaugural class was inducted on March 26, 2012 during a ceremony held on the NSU campus. The ceremony included candle-lighting and pinning ceremonies. Dr. Sandra DeLoatch, NSU Interim Provost, served as the keynote speaker.
Chi Alpha Sigma was founded at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., in May of 1996. Its mission is to bring honor and recognition to deserving student athletes, their families, teams, athletic departments and colleges in much the same way that Phi Beta Kappa honors scholastics.
The purpose of the organization is to: 1) Encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities; 2) Recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners; 3) Encourage good citizenship, moral character and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics; 4) Recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department and college or university; and 5) Mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.
Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon selected student-athletes. NSU serves as the Virginia Eta Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma.
