PORTSMOUTH, Va. – One month ago, Kyle O'Quinn led Norfolk State to an historic NCAA Tournament upset of No. 3 Missouri. This week, O'Quinn continues to garner national attention while pursuing his professional dreams.
The Spartans center earned Most Valuable Player honors at the 60th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a showcase for aspiring professional players who just completed their collegiate eligibility.
Though his Portsmouth Sports Club team lost a 92-87 decision to Roger Brown's in the PIT final, O'Quinn was solid throughout the tournament. He averaged 11.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game. He was the first Spartan to participate in the PIT since two-time MEAC Player of the Year Damian Woolfolk in 2000.
O'Quinn started off the tourney with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in an 88-76 win over Norfolk Sports Club on Wednesday. He followed that up with nine points and 11 rebounds in PSC's 76-74 win over Cherry, Bekaert and Holland in Friday's semifinals. Though he managed just eight points in the championship game loss, O'Quinn grabbed 12 rebounds and swatted away six shots, showing off the form that twice earned him MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Next is a bit of a waiting game for O'Quinn. He hopes to earn an invitation to the June NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago to further improve his stock. No Spartan has been selected in the NBA Draft in NSU's Division I era (since 1997-98).
