NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team kept its MEAC tournament hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Savannah State Monday evening at the NSU Tennis Courts.
The Spartans won four of the five contested singles matches to earn the victory, moving to .500 on the season with a 10-10 overall record. NSU improved to 2-3 in conference play with one MEAC match left next Sunday.
Due to the late start of the match, at 5:45 p.m., the teams played singles first. Because NSU had already wrapped up the victory following singles play, the two squads did not compete in doubles.
Freshman
Kia Batiste had a dominating match at the No. 5 singles position, defeating Ge'Anne Hilton by a 6-1, 6-0 score. One spot higher in the lineup, sophomore
Maryna Kariuk downed Chandel McDonie, 6-1, 6-3, at the fourth slot.
The Spartans also won the top two spots, with senior
Naeemah Brooks downing Esmira Gheisary, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 slot. Freshman
Laura Gutierrez also helped NSU secure the win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicole Ashiedu at the No. 2 position.
Along with the default win at the No. 6 position due to NSU's short-handed lineup, Savannah State (3-11, 0-6) also won at No. 3 singles when Sandra Kristjansdottir earned a come-from-behind victory, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) against junior
Rebecca Graff.
NSU will play Bethune-Cookman on Sunday at 10 a.m. in a neutral site match in Florence, S.C. The Spartans need a win there as well as a Wildcat loss to Florida A&M to get into the MEAC tournament.
