Schulle, Riley Combine to Shut Out UMES, 8-0, 10-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRINCESS, Md. – Sophomore Jamie Schulle tied a school record with 12 strikeouts, and the Norfolk State softball team dominated UMES in a pair of five-inning wins, 8-0, 10-0, Friday afternoon in a MEAC doubleheader at Hawks Field.

Schulle gave up just four hits in the first game of the day, while Riley did even better in Game 2, allowing just two base hits. Freshman Haley Ward went 4-for-4 in that second game. NSU tallied 20 hits on the afternoon and played flawless ball in moving to 14-17 overall, 3-2 in conference play.

Ward hit 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with four runs and two RBI, including a pair of run-scoring singles in the second game. Freshmen Alina Moriarty and Whittni Gray each blasted a two-run home run, and sophomore catcher Kathy Cortez scored two runs and drove in two more as well in Game 2.

Cortez, senior Whitney Holland and junior Gipsy Ramirez each drove in two runs in Game 1 to support Schulle's big day in the circle. The left-hander struck out seven in a row beginning with the third out of the first inning and recorded 12 of the last 13 outs of the contest via strikeout.

Schulle's 12-strikeout performance marked the sixth time an NSU pitcher has posted a dozen K's in a game, and the first since Micki Rodriguez did so nearly six years to the day, also against UMES, on April 5, 2006. Schulle improved her overall record to 7-8.

NSU quickly put runners on all three bases to start the first game of the day, and Holland followed with a run-scoring single to put the Spartans on the board with no outs. UMES starter Carmen Gurrola got the next two outs before Ramirez drew a bases-loaded walk to score the second run of the inning.

Cortez hit an RBI groundout in the second and Ramirez' run-scoring single in the third pushed the lead to 4-0, and then a four-run fourth inning capped the scoring for the Spartans.

Ward tripled to lead off the fourth and scored when Cortez reached on an infield error. Holland's single brought home Cortez, and then Holland scored when sophomore Nikki Jones lined her fourth double of the season. Senior Danielle Wright capped the scoring for Game 1 with her second one-bagger of the contest.

Riley (7-9) allowed just two batters to reach second in the nightcap, and the Spartans again run-ruled the Hawks in five innings.

Ward singled to start the game to extend her hitting streak to 12 games and scored on another infield error on the Hawks. Later in the inning, Wright hit a two-out single to plate Cortez for the early 2-0 lead.

Ward hit an RBI single in the second to score Gray, and Cortez followed with a double for a 4-0 lead. Moriarty lined a two-run shot in the very next at bat to help NSU start pulling away in the game.

After failing to get a run across the plate in the third and fourth innings, the Spartans put four more on the board in the fifth. It all started when Holland and Wright singled to lead off the frame. Pinch runner Marjorie Pettitt got thrown out at home on a fly ball to center to put two outs on the scoreboard, but Ramirez brought home Wright in the next at bat and Gray followed with her two-run shot for a 9-0 advantage.

Sophomore Morgan Boyd later crossed the plate in the inning on Ward's RBI single to cap the scoring for the day. Riley struck out four while allowing just the two UMES hits.

Wright hit 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI combined on the day. UMES remained winless on the season at 0-25 overall, 0-8 in conference play.

Gurrola, the only pitcher on the Hawks roster, allowed five earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in the first game, followed by nine earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in Game 2.

The two squads will finish the three-game series Saturday at noon.
