Match Results

FLORENCE, S.C.
– Senior Arsenio Culver won in both singles and doubles during a 5-2 loss to conference foe Bethune-Cookman Sunday morning at the Florence Tennis Center in the last match of the regular season for the Spartans.

Culver and freshman Igor Braga won in singles, while Culver and senior Ben Marks won their doubles match as the Spartans fell to 12-13 overall, 1-3 in MEAC play this year. The Wildcats improved to 13-13, 2-2.

The loss locked up the No. 4 seed in the Southern Division for NSU, which will head to the MEAC tournament for a quarterfinal match on Friday at noon against the No. 1 seed from the North.

Culver and Marks downed the B-CU duo of Marc Misanovic and Artem Vassiliey by an 8-6 score at No. 1 doubles, although the Wildcats picked up the doubles point after winning the other two matches. Juan Varon and Santiago Lobelo defeated Braga and sophomore Kent Austin, 9-7, at the No. 2 spot, while Gilbert Kibet and Diego Garvito pulled out an 8-3 win over freshmen Daniel Grauel and Shaheed Mourillon-Swift.

Culver defeated Misanovic for the second time on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Braga gave NSU its second point of the match at the third slot, falling to Lobelo in the first set, 6-3, before rebounding to win 6-1, 6-4, in the next two sets for the victory.

The Wildcats had to rally for two of their singles wins to help pull out the victory. After Varon swept Marks 6-0 in the first set of their match at the No. 2 spot, Marks turned around and won the second set, 6-4. Varon, though, responded with a 6-2 third-set win.

Then at the No. 5 slot, Vassiliey picked up a 6-4 win over senior Roosevelt Cooper in the first set before Cooper earned an 8-6 tiebreaker score in the second set for a 7-6 victory. Vassiliey defeated Cooper by a 10-4 margin in the third-set tiebreaker.

In the other two matches, Grauel lost to Garvito at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-2, while Austin fell to Vitor Belucci at the sixth singles position, 6-3, 6-3.
