Duncan's Shot Put Gold Medal Highlights Day 2 for 1st-Place Spartan Men

Day 2 Results

GREENSBORO, N.C.
- Senior Theo Duncan earned his first career gold medal in the shot put to highlight the second day of action for the Norfolk State men at the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Led by Duncan's first-ever MEAC title and a strong showing in the 5,000 meters, the NSU men widened their lead as they seek their seventh consecutive sweep of the conference indoor and outdoor titles. NSU has 56.5 points after six events, while Maryland Eastern Shore is second with 29.

Duncan unleashed a personal-best throw of 53 feet, 6.25 inches, topping his previous best throw by some two and a half feet to win the gold medal. NSU also had two runner-up finishes in Friday's events - senior Rashad Cannon was second in the long jump (23-4) and classmate Josef Tessema was runner-up in the 5,000. Tessema ran a time of 15 minutes, 3.62 seconds, just behind winner Elias Chesire of Florida A&M (15:02.34). Tessema was one of five Spartan men who finished in the top seven in the 5k. Nathnael Meseret was fourth, Vincent Rono was fifth, Amos Kipkosgei was sixth, and Damtew Adnew placed seventh.

NSU also fared well in Friday's semifinals as all but one Spartan who ran a preliminary heat qualified for Saturday's event finals. Those who advanced to Saturday include Keith Nkrumah in the 110 hurdles, Sean Holston in the 400 and Vincent Brown in the 800. Brown ran a PR of 1:50.77.

The final day of action gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday.
