Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Norfolk State got back on track and snapped an 11-match losing streak in a 3-0 victory over the Morgan State volleyball team Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.
For the eighth straight match, senior
Charlotte Armstead led the Spartan in kills, tallying 10 on just 14 swings as NSU improved to 3-16 overall, 1-1 in MEAC play. The Bears remained winless on the season at 0-15 overall, 0-3 in the conference, after falling to the Spartans, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17.
Two days after giving up numerous points via attack errors to Coppin State in a 3-0 loss, the Spartans hit a much better .275 on the afternoon and limited the Bears to a -.015 attack percentage. NSU had 11 service errors but had a 10-0 advantage over Morgan State in service aces.
Senior
Beatriz Ferreira had five of those aces, while junior
Coralie Jarema had eight kills and five digs. Redshirt sophomore
Noelle Eagles led all players with seven digs.
A couple of attack errors on the Bears got NSU on the board first, and back-to-back kills from sophomore
Jasmin Flowers and Jarema made it 8-4 in favor of the Spartans. Morgan State cut the deficit to two, but a little later an extended 11-2 run by the Spartans, highlighted by seven straight NSU points at one point, made it 20-9. Redshirt sophomore
Kylee Thiim ended the first set with a kill.
Janelle Wilson had three kills in a four-serve span to give Morgan State a 7-6 early in the second set. Kills from Armstead and Jarema helped NSU take an 11-8 lead after a 5-1 run, but the Bears immediately tied it up at 11-all. The Spartans then turned a one-point lead into an eight-point lead, 21-13. The last six points of the set came via errors on both teams.
Morgan State again had an early lead in the third set, 6-4, but a 6-0 run by NSU, including three Ferreira service aces, gave the Spartans a 10-6 lead. NSU stretched the lead to five and then to seven, 19-12, on a service ace from junior
Goda Jankauskaite. Morgan State got as close as five, 21-16, but NSU scored four of the last five points of the match.
Freshman
Darcy Moore had 22 assists on the day, and sophomore
Adriana Ramos totaled five digs and three service aces.
Arianna Hayden had six kills to lead the Bears.
NSU will welcome William & Mary to Joseph Echols Hall Tuesday at 6 p.m.
