Spartans Return to MEAC Play on Saturday at UMES

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va.
- The Norfolk State women's basketball team returns to MEAC play on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they face Maryland Eastern Shore at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md.  Tip-off is at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Spartans suffered an 82-47 loss to Hofstra on Jan. 3.  Senior Recca Trice and junior Aivah Parham led NSU with nine points each.  The Spartans shot 29.4 (20-of-68) percent from the floor. Hofstra had four players in double-figures, including Asia Jackson, who led Hofstra with 20 points and seven steals.  Shaunte Evans tallied 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Deven Green and Candace Bond each picked up 10 points and seven rebounds.  The Pride shot 51.7 (30-of-58) percent from the floor.

All-Time Series: NSU leads the series with UMES, 20-12.  Last season the Spartans were 1-1 against the Hawks.  NSU defeated UMES, 61-58 at on Jan. 7 in Joseph Echols Hall, but fell to the Hawks, 62-58, on Feb. 6.

About UMES: UMES (4-8) is coming off of a 57-46 loss to Brown on Dec. 29 at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.  Karona Roach led the Hawks with 13 points and six rebounds.  Jessica Long added 10 points and seven rebounds.  UMES shot 20.9 (14-of-67) percent from the floor.

Last Year Against UMES:  In the first meeting with UMES on Jan. 7 Rae Corbo nailed a 3-pointer off of a last-second inbounds pass to give the Spartans a 61-58 victory over the Hawks at Joseph Echols Hall.  Corbo and Batavia Owens led NSU with 16 points each.  Adobi Agbasi led the Hawks with 12 points and one rebound.

In the second meeting UMES ended the second half on a 17-2 run to force overtime, and the Hawks prevailed in the extra session, 62-58, over NSU on Feb. 6 at W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.  Chelsea Sanders led UMES with 25 points and six rebounds.  Tyisha Bridges and Whitney Long had 12 points each for the Spartans.

Scoring Leaders: Kashay Barnes leads NSU in scoring averaging 8.9 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 8.4 points per game.

Cracking the top 10: Recca Trice's seven assists in the game against Appalachian State moved her into sixth place all-time in the NSU record book for career assists.  Her 400 career assists puts her 28 away from tying Dekisha Thompson for fifth all-time.

MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top five in four different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top five in five different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 11.9 boards per game.  Gordon also currently ranks 9th in the NCAA in rebounding.  Recca Trice is ranked 30th in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.
