NSU and Howard Face-off on ESPNU on Monday

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va.
- The Norfolk State women's basketball team is looking for its first MEAC win of the season as they travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday, Jan. 14 to take on Howard at Burr Gymnasium.  Tip-off is at 4:30 p.m.

Media Coverage: The game against Howard will be televised live on ESPNU. The game will also be broadcast live on WNSB Hot 91.1 with Ross Gordon on the call. Live stats are available here.
 
Last Time Out: The Spartans fell to UMES in overtime 86-80 on Jan. 12.  Junior Kashay Barnes led NSU with 25 points and two steals.  The Spartans shot 46.3 (31-of-67) percent from the floor. Three other Spartans scored in double-figures including Rachel Gordon, who tallied 17 points and eight rebounds, Ebony Brown had 14 points, and Recca Trice had a career-high 13 points, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals.

UMES shot 37.3 (25-of-67) percent from the floor and had three players score in double-figures.  Karona Roach led the way for the Hawks with 31 points, Sha-Kiyla Finney finished with 14 points and six assists, and Shawnee Sweeney had 13 points.

All-Time Series: Howard leads the series with NSU, 27-9. The last time the Spartans defeated the Bison was on Feb. 4, 2008.  NSU came away with a 94-88 win in overtime.

About Howard: The Bison (7-7, 2-1) are coming off of a 52-50 loss to Hampton on Jan. 12 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.  Saadia Doyle led Howard with 14 points and six rebounds. Victoria Gonzalez added 10 points for the Bison.  Howard shot 38.9 (21-of-54) percent from the floor.

Last Year Against Howard:  The Spartans suffered a 73-50 loss to Howard at Joseph Echols Hall on Jan. 9, 2012. The Bison had three players in double-figures which included Saadia Doyle's 25 points and six rebounds, and 18 points each from Tamoria Holmes and Zykia Brown.

Whitney Long led NSU with 14 points while Rae Corbo finished the game with 12 points and four assists.  The Spartans were held to 30.9 (17-of-55) percent shooting while Howard shot 45.6 (26-of-57) percent.

Scoring Leaders: Kashay Barnes leads NSU in scoring averaging 10.1 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 9.2 points per game. Barnes scored a career-high 25 points against UMES on Jan. 12.

Cracking the top 10: Recca Trice's seven assists in the game against Appalachian State moved her into sixth place all-time in the NSU record book for career assists.  Her 408 career assists puts her 20 away from tying Dekisha Thompson for fifth all-time.

MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in four different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in five different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 11.5 boards per game.  Gordon also currently ranks 9th in the NCAA in rebounding.  Recca Trice is ranked 30th in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.
