Hampton Takes Care of NSU, 3-0

Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton made quick work of the Norfolk State volleyball team in a 3-0 victory over the Spartans Sunday afternoon at HU's Holland Hall.

The Pirates maintained first place in the MEAC Northern Division by winning 25-19, 25-15 and 25-11. The Spartans dropped to 4-3 in conference play and 8-14 overall.

Krista Kraskura and Vendula Strakova had 24 of Hampton's 34 kills on the day for an offense that hit .403 for the match.

The Spartans could not find a rhythm on offense, hitting .043 with 23 attack errors. Sophomore Jessica Johnson and senior Goda Jankauskaite had seven kills apiece.

Both teams showed plenty of promise early on, but NSU called timeout down 11-8 to stem any early Hampton momentum. Johnson kept NSU in the set, and the Spartans cut the deficit to one, 15-14, on a block by senior Coralie Jarema and sophomore Darcy Moore. The Spartans, though, had to burn their second timeout during a 6-1 run for the Pirates that eventually led to an early 1-0 lead in the match.

NSU started off the second set with a 5-1 lead, but the Pirates quickly erased it by winning six of the next seven points. After a Spartan timeout, Hampton extended its lead to eight and never let NSU get any closer than six the rest of the way.

A service ace from Moore tied up the third set at 5-all, but Hampton won six of the next seven to force an NSU timeout. That run extended into a 15-2 spurt that quickly ended the match.

Hampton improved to 13-8 overall and 7-0 in the MEAC.

NSU faces Coppin State and Morgan State on the road next weekend, beginning with Morgan State on Friday at 7 p.m.
