VCU Sweeps NSU in Mid-Week Match, 3-0

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Kalah Jones and Romana Kriskova combined for 23 kills, and the VCU defense had 14 blocks in a 3-0 victory over the Norfolk State volleyball team Tuesday night in a non-conference match at the Siegel Center.

Sophomore Angie Darcus tallied 12 kills and hit .318 for the Spartans, but NSU's offense attacked at a -.028 clip for the match. The Spartans did make a go of it in the third set, dropping the final set by a 26-24 margin after VCU won the first two, 25-11 and 25-16.

The Spartans won three of the first four points of that third and final set before a couple of blocks allowed VCU to take the lead back. The teams went back and forth, but eventually NSU pulled ahead, 15-12. A little later, a couple of kills from Darcus and a block from junior Jasmin Flowers and sophomore Darcy Moore again put the Spartans up by three, 19-16.

Norfolk State (6-12) called timeout after its lead shrank to one, but two kills from Jones and one last block closed out the set and the match for VCU.

Tied at 4-4 at the start of the match, the Rams (16-4) used a 6-0 run followed by a 7-0 spurt to pull away from NSU by more than a 10-point margin.

Darcus had six kills in the second set as the Spartans got a little closer. A couple of kills from sophomore Janay Frazier helped NSU take an early one-point lead, and both players added kills throughout the set. NSU was unable to string together back-to-back points, though, and the Rams eventually won by nine.

Frazier finished with six kills in the match, while redshirt junior Noelle Eagles led all players with 14 digs.

Janelle Sykes had seven blocks, and Nora Reed added six for the Rams. Kriskova led VCU with nine digs to go with three blocks.

NSU will head up to Washington, D.C. on Friday to face Howard at 7 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
