Spartans Set to Face-Off Against Radford on Friday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team hosts Radford University on Friday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Halls. This is the first of three straight home games for the Spartans.

All-Time Series: Radford leads the series against NSU, 8-3.

Last Time Out: Redshirt junior Rae Corbo led Norfolk State with 17 points, but it was not enough as Morehead State defeated NSU, 73-67, in the season opener last Friday afternoon at Johnson Arena.

Corbo and junior Quineshia Leonard were the only Spartans to score in double-figures. Leonard notched her first double-double of the season as she finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

NSU shot 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field and 31-of-41 (75.6 percent) from the free throw line. Aside from Corbo and Leonard, other notable scorers for NSU were senior Rachel Gordon and freshman Dominique Harper, who added eight points each. Gordon also grabbed seven rebounds. Harper had six rebounds.

The Spartan defense collected 13 steals and scored 17 points from 25 Eagles turnovers. NSU also outrebounded Morehead State, 49-40.

About Radford: The Highlanders (2-0) are coming off of a 72-49 win over Lynchburg College on Nov. 12 at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.

Radford shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) percent from the floor, while holding Lynchburg to 29.5 percent (18-of-61) shooting.

The Highlanders had four players score in double-figures, including Ayana Avery, who led all scorers with 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Aisha Foy added 12 points. Radford also had two other players post double-doubles as Rachael Ross tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jordynn Gaymon posted 10 points and 13 rebounds. Gaymon also had four blocks.

Last Time Against Radford: Sophomore Ebony Brown had a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers in NSU's 73-50 loss to Radford at the Dedmon Center on Dec. 13, 2012.

The Spartans shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor. NSU also shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from 3-point range.

Ashley Buckhannon led the Highlanders with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Radford also had three other players in double-figures, including Victoria Hamilton, who had the only double-double of the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Aisha Foy had 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists while Jordynn Gaymon tallied 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Radford outscored the Spartans 40-20 in the paint and outrebounded NSU, 41-36.

Leonard Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week: Quineshia Leonard earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Nov. 11.

Leonard came away with 15 points and 10 rebounds in NSU's 73-67 loss at Morehead State on Nov. 8. Overall, Leonard shot 5-of-11 from the field and 5-of-9 from the line. She also recorded one block and one steal.

Defensive Minded: NSU outrebounded Morehead State, 49-40.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon ranks 10th all-time in career rebounding at NSU. She needs 37 more rebounds to move into ninth place.

Glad to be Home: NSU will play several home games this season as 13 different opponents will come to Joseph Echols Hall this year.
