NSU Hosts UNCG on Wednesday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team welcomes the Spartans of the University of North Carolina Greensboro on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall. This is the second of three straight home games for the Spartans.

All-Time Series: NSU leads the series against UNCG, 2-1.

Last Time Out: Senior Rachel Gordon posted her first double-double of the season to lead Norfolk State (1-1) over Radford 66-54 in the home opener on Friday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

Gordon finished the night with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Aside from Gordon, redshirt junior Rae Corbo and junior Ebony Brown also scored in double-figures. Corbo tallied 12 points and six assists.

NSU shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field and 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line. The Spartans also outrebounded Radford, 44-40.

About UNCG: The Spartans (1-2) are coming off of a 72-63 win against South Carolina State on Nov. 15 at Fleming Gymnasium in Greensboro, N.C.

UNCG shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) percent from the floor, while holding the Lady Bulldogs to 39.7 percent (25-of-63) shooting.

Lucy Mason led UNCG with 17 points, four rebounds and six assists. Breonna Patterson tallied 13 points. Janae Stevenson rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Spartans with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Last Time Against UNCG: Rachel Gordon scored 15 points and tallied 16 rebounds in Norfolk State's 71-63 loss against UNCG at Fleming Gymnasium on Dec. 15, 2012.

Kashay Barnes tallied 11 points, five assists and three steals for NSU while Ebony Brown and Aivah Parham added nine points each for the Spartans. NSU was held to 34.2-percent shooting while UNCG shot 36.4 percent. NSU won the rebounding battle 51-39.

UNCG's Lucy Mason led all scorers with 22 points. Aside from Mason, UNCG had three other players in double-figures including Ciara Morris, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Janae Stevenson had 11 while Jarae Savage had 10 points.

Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring averaging 14.5 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 12.0 points per game.

MEAC Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in 10 different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in seven different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 12.1 boards per game.

Gordon Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week: For the second week in a row, NSU has had a player named as the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week as Rachel Gordon earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.

Gordon had her first double-double of the season and 16th of her career as she totaled 16 points and 16 rebounds in NSU's 66-54 win over Radford on Nov. 15. She shot 80 percent (8-of-10) from the field and also recorded one block.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon ranks 10th all-time in career rebounding at NSU. She needs 21 more rebounds to move into ninth place.

Glad to be Home: NSU will play several home games this season as 13 different opponents will come to Joseph Echols Hall this year.
