NSU Falls to UNCG 73-66

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State could not withstand a furious rally the last four minutes of the game and fell to UNCG, 73-66, Wednesday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU fell to 1-2 overall while UNCG improved to 2-2.

Redshirt junior Rae Corbo led NSU with 22 points, four assists and two steals. She shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field and was perfect from the free throw line (6-of-6).

UNCG scored first on a layup from Janae Stevenson with 19:42 on the clock. Stevenson's layup sparked an 8-4 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Bailey Williams with 17:50 left in the first half.

Junior Ebony Brown found success from the long range as nailed a 3-pointer with 10:52 left in the first half to cap a 14-3 run for NSU to make the score 18-11. Brown totaled 19 points in NSU's loss. She also shot 50 percent (2-of-4) from beyond the arc.

UNCG responded with a 13-4 run as Lucy Mason drained a jumper with 5:38 left in the half to take the lead at 24-22. Mason contributed 13 points and five steals for UNCG.

A layup by Brown with 36 seconds left gave the Spartans a 36-32 lead going into halftime. NSU shot 48.3 from the field in the first half.

Once again Stevenson scored the first bucket of the half for UNCG with 19:32 left to play. She led all scorers with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

NSU continued to play aggressively and led by as many as 12 points after Corbo hit a jumper with 10:37 on the clock. Junior Quineshia Leonard also scored inside and capped a 16-6 run for the Spartans to make the score 52-40.

The game was tied 10 times on the night. UNCG used another layup by Stevenson to spark an 18-6 run that ended on a basket from Jade Scaife with 4:24 to go in the game to tie the game at 58. Leonard answered on the other end to tie the game at 60 with 3:44 remaining.

UNCG took the lead for good after a jumper from Stevenson. NSU's last field came from Corbo with 17.1 seconds left.

The Spartans host Wofford on Sunday. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. in Joseph Echols Hall.
