NSU Blows Past Virginia University-Lynchburg 116-40

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior forward Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Norfolk State past Virginia University-Lynchburg 116-40 at Joseph Echols Hall on Friday afternoon. The last time NSU held an opponent to 40 points was last season when the Spartans defeated Bethune-Cookman, 67-40 on March 2.

The 76 point win was the largest margin of victory for the Spartans (4-6) since they defeated St. Paul's by 83 points on Jan. 16, 1996. The win also set a Division-I record for the Spartans and ranks fifth all-time in NSU's record book.

Gordon made all eight of her field-goals and shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free throw line. Five other Spartans also finished the game in double-figures. Junior Ebony Brown contributed 18 points and three assists. Brown was 4-of-6 from 3-point range on the afternoon. Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman Logan Powell had a season-high 14 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Junior Quineshia Leonard scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Freshman Dominique Harper rounded out the scoring effort for NSU with 10 points and a season-high nine assists.

The Spartans started the first half on 16-3 run with a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers from Brown with 19:02 on the clock. Gordon capped the run with 16:43 left on a layup.

Sogona Sidibe knocked down a jumper on the other end with 15:10 left in the first half to keep the Lady Dragons within 12 as they trailed 22-10. Daniel finished the game 10 points and eight rebounds.

NSU continued to be aggressive offensively as Corbo drained a 3-pointer from the corner on with an assist from freshman Kieera Basey with 9:09 to go before halftime to give the Spartans a 39-12 lead over Virginia-Lynchburg.

Sidibe scored the last field-goal of the half for VUL with 3:50 on the clock as the Lady Dragons continued to trail NSU, 48-20.

Freshman Janel Cannon scored on a jumper with 55 seconds left to send NSU into halftime with 55-24 lead over the Lady Dragons. Cannon scored a career-high eight points on 4-of-6 shooting on the afternoon.

The Spartans came out of the break on fire as Corbo knocked down another 3-pointer with 19:47 to go in the game that sparked a 20-5 run. Freshman Amber Brown closed out the run on a layup with 11:48 left in the game as NSU continued to lead VUL, 78-29.

VUL scored on a jumper by Loreal Bledsoe to make the score 93-35 with 7:04 on the clock. Bledsoe contributed four points and six rebounds on the afternoon.

NSU went on a 17-5 run for the next six minutes, which included a pair of layups in the paint from Powell and a pair of three's from Brown. Brown's 3-pointer with 1:56 left in the game gave the Spartans a 110-38 lead over the Lady Dragons.

Sidibe scored the last field-goal for VUL with 1:34 remaining in the half.

Freshman Amber Brown, who had a season-high nine points and four rebounds, knocked down the last bucket for the Spartans with 10 seconds on the clock. Brown shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the field.

The Spartans shot 63.2 percent (48-of-76) on the afternoon and were 7-of-16 from 3-point range. NSU also finished the night shooting 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Spartans outrebounded VUL, 53-29. NSU also posted 32 assists, which set another Division-I record for NSU. The last time NSU had at least 20 assists in Division–I was in the game against Morgan State on Jan. 14, 2012. The Spartans finished that game with 23 assists.

VUL finished the game shooting 24.6 percent (15-of-61) and was 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the free throw line. Sierra Thomas led the Lady Dragons with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.

NSU will head to Harrisonburg, Va., on Dec. 29 to take on UMBC at the James Madison Invitational. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
