NSU Hosts Bethune-Cookman on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team is looking for its first MEAC win of the season as they take Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon. Game time is at 4 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.

All-Time Series: The series between NSU and Bethune-Cookman is tied, 12-12.

Last Time Out: A 31-10 run in the last 11 minutes of the game lifted Florida A&M over Norfolk State, 83-62, in the first MEAC game of the season on Thursday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

Rachel Gordon, Rae Corbo and Ebony Brown led the Spartans with 16 points each. Gordon continued to well defensively and tallied 17 rebounds to post her second straight double-double of the season.

Gordon scored NSU's last field goal of the first half with 3:54 left as well as the Spartans' last points of the half after she made the back end of a one-and-one. NSU went to the locker room at halftime trailing Florida A&M 48-34.

The Spartans came out of the break on fire. Junior Quineshia Leonard sparked a 16-4 for NSU on a jumper with 19:29 left in the game. Corbo and Brown contributed to the run with a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman Dominique Harper knocked down a jumper from the corner to tie the game at 52 with 11:35 to play. NSU never led in the game.

Florida A&M responded on the other end as Rubin scored inside to retake the lead. The Lady Rattlers took the lead for good after a bucket from Jasmine Grice with 10:55 left that made the score 56-54. Grice led all scorers with 30 points.

NSU finished the night shooting 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the field and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the free throw line. NSU shot only 20 percent (4-of-20) from 3-point range on the night.

The Lady Rattlers shot 37.1 percent (26-of-70) overall and were 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from behind the arc. FAMU did well at the free throw line, finishing at 88.5 percent (23-of-26).

About B-CU: Bethune-Cookman (2-5) defeated Edward Waters, 63-53, on Monday night at Moore Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats shot only 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free-throw line. Chastity Taylor led B-CU with 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Kendra Cooper and Shakeyia Colyer also contributed nine points each.

Last Time Against B-CU: Last season Aivah Parham scored 21 points to lift the Norfolk State women's basketball team over Bethune-Cookman, 67-40, at Joseph Echols Hall on March 2.

The Spartans shot 61.2 (30-of-49) percent from the field on the afternoon while holding B-CU to just 23.8 (15-of-63) percent shooting. Aside from Parham, Quineshia Leonard tallied 11 points and 13 rebounds. Two other NSU players finished the game scoring in double-figures. Rachel Gordon tallied 10 points and two rebounds to claim her eighth-straight double-figure scoring game and Kashay Barnes also posted 10 points, respectively.

NSU outrebounded the Lady Wildcats, 36-34. The Spartans also outscored B-CU, 34-22, in the paint and outscored them off of turnovers, 30-17.

Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring averaging 14.0 points per game followed by Ebony Brown, who is averaging 10.7 points per game.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon currently ranks 8th all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 826 rebounds. She needs 49 more rebounds to tie Beverly Davis for 7th place all-time career rebounding at NSU.

NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 1 in the nation in rebounds per game and Rae Corbo is No. 56 in free throw percentage.

As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in 10 different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in five different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 15.4 rebounds per game.
