NSU Welcomes UMES on Monday

NORFOLK, Va.
- The Norfolk State women's basketball team is set to face Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, Feb. 11 at Joseph Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.  Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

Last Time Out: Junior Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Norfolk State women's basketball team to a 61-51 victory over Delaware State on Feb. 9 at Joseph Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.

The Spartans (4-17, 2-8) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win against the Lady Hornets. Delaware State fell to 5-3 in the conference and 8-13 overall.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.2 (23-of-52) percent from the field. Aside from Gordon, three NSU players scored in double-figures including senior Recca Trice, who added 12 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Junior Aivah Parham and senior Batavia Owens tallied 12 points and six rebounds each. This was Owens' third consecutive double-figure scoring game.

Delaware State shot 34.6 (18-of-52) percent on the night. Tasia Bristow led all scorers with 24 points and was the only player to score in double-figures for the Lady Hornets. Tierra Hawkins posted nine points and nine rebounds.

All-Time Series: NSU leads the series with UMES, 20-13. The Lady Hawks defeated the Spartans earlier this season, 86-80.

About UMES: UMES (6-13, 2-6) suffered a 59-39 loss to Howard on Feb. 9 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. The Lady Hawks shot 19.1 (9-of-47) percent from the field on the afternoon while Howard finished the game shooting 30.3 (20-of-66) percent. Jameelah Pickard led UMES with six points and three rebounds.

Last Time Against UMES:  Karona Roach had 31 points to lift Maryland Eastern Shore over Norfolk State 86-80 in overtime in Princess Anne, Md., at the W.P. Hytche Center on Jan. 12. 

NSU had a collective effort in scoring as Kashay Barnes led the Spartans with 25 points, three assists and two steals.  Rachel Gordon finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, Ebony Brown had 14 points, and Trice added 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists. 

The Spartans shot 46.3 (31-of-67) percent and held UMES to 37.3 (25-of-67) percent. Aside from Roach, the Hawks had two other players in double-figures.  Finney tallied 14 points and six assists while Sweeney added 13 points.

Scoring Leaders: Rachel Gordon leads NSU in scoring averaging 10.6 points per game followed by Aivah Parham and Kashay Barnes, who are both averaging 8.5 points per game.

MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in four different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players also rank in the top 5 in six different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 10.5 boards per game.  Gordon also currently ranks 21st in the NCAA in rebounding.  Recca Trice is second in the league for assists and is ranked 30th in the nation in assists per games.

Cracking the top 10: Recca Trice's eight assists in the game against Morgan State on Feb. 4 moved her into third place all-time in the NSU record book for career assists. Trice has 120 assists on the season and her 452 career assists puts her 15 away from tying Sharron Tapps for fourth all-time.

Rachel Gordon's eight rebounds in the game against Coppin State on Jan. 19 moved her into 11th place all-time in the NSU record book for career rebounds. Gordon has 192 rebounds on the season and her 659 career rebounds puts her 52 away from tying Andrea Watts for 10th all-time.

Winning the Rebounding Battle:  NSU outrebounded Delaware State, 40-28, on Feb. 9, with Rachel Gordon leading the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Defensive Minded: Rachel Gordon tallied 13 rebounds in the Spartans 61-51 win over Delaware State on Feb. 9.  Gordon currently leads the MEAC in rebounding, averaging 10.7 rebounds per game.
