MEAC Day 2 Results
LANDOVER, Md. –
John James' first career MEAC indoor high jump gold medal and an eighth straight distance medley victory highlighted day two action for the Norfolk State men's track and field team at the 2013 MEAC Indoor Championships on Friday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartan men extended their lead and now have 67 points in quest of their record eighth straight MEAC indoor title. Hampton is second with 38 points.
James set a new personal indoor best in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 11.5 inches. James, who has won the last two MEAC outdoor high jump titles, now has three career conference gold medals. Teammate
Robert Thrasher was fifth in the same event with a top jump of 6-7.
In other field events, junior
Ian Copeland established a new season-best in the weight throw with a top toss of 52-3.25. That was good for sixth place in a very competitive field.
In addition, freshman
Marcus Finney was third in the heptathlon with a school-record tally of 4,445 points.
The Spartans were successful throughout the day advancing their top runners through to Saturday's finals, including
James Taylor in the 60 meters,
Keith Nkrumah in the 60 hurdles and
Damian Smith in the 400. NSU also has three runners in tomorrow's 200m finals, four in the mile run and six in the 3,000m.
NSU capped its day on Friday by winning the MEAC men's distance medley relay race for the eighth straight year. The quartet of
Desmond Fogg,
Quentin Parker,
Marquis Worsley and
Nathnael Meseret crossed the line in 10 minutes, 19.31 seconds.
