Game Notes
NORFOLK, Va. - After getting the first Saturday and Sunday off from competition since the opening weekend of the 2012-13 basketball season, the Norfolk State men's team will take part in the second Battle of the Bay this year at rival Hampton Monday night at 7 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center. The game is set for an ESPNU broadcast.
Media Coverage: The contest against the Pirates can be
heard live on WNSB Hot 91.1, with Ross Gordon and Maguell Davis on the call. Matt Schick and Stan Lewter will don the headsets for ESPNU.
Live stats will be available as well.
MEAC Standings: NSU currently sits atop the conference at 11-0 ahead of North Carolina Central (10-1) and Savannah State (9-2). Every other school has at least three MEAC losses, giving NSU a big leg up in securing a top 3 finish in the regular season and thus a bye in the MEAC tournament.
The Spartans also enter the contest riding a 10-game win streak with a 16-10 overall record. NSU is one of six schools in the country - Miami, Memphis, Akron, Louisiana Tech and Gonzaga being the others - that has yet to lose a conference game this season. Hampton, meanwhile, sits in fourth in the conference at 7-3, 10-13 overall.
Last Time Out:
Pendarvis Williams scored point No. 1,000 in his career, and his 17 on the night led NSU to an 85-63 win over UMES last Monday. NSU tied its season high with 85 points, shooting 30-of-62 on the night (48.4 percent) while building as much as a 25-point lead late in the game.
Malcolm Hawkins added 16 points, and
Brandon Goode tallied his second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. NSU finished the game 9-of-20 from 3-point range. NSU out-rebounded the Hawks by nine and also had the advantage in points off turnovers, 19-9, and second chance points, 16-6.
Series History: NSU has won three in a row over Hampton after the Spartans' 74-67 win at home on Jan. 26. NSU leads the all-time series with the Pirates, 80-41.
About Hampton: The Pirates have won five in a row, including the last two in overtime to Savannah State and Delaware State, to move into fourth place in the MEAC. HU only averages between 61 and 62 points a game, led by Deron Powers' 12.0 clip per game. Du'Vaughn Maxwell leads the way with 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks to go with 9.7 points, while Emmanuel Okoroba tallies 8.1 points per game. Hampton has not shot well from beyond the arc, hitting less than 26 percent, but the Pirates do rebound well, posting a +0.5 rebounding margin.
March to 1,000: With a 3-pointer at the 1:22 mark of the first half against UMES,
Pendarvis Williams became the 30th all-time 1,000-point scorer at NSU and the fifth to top the mark since Tony Murphy did so during the 2006-07 season.
Winning: NSU's 11-0 start in the MEAC stands as the best start in conference play during the Division I era and the best since going 14-0 in the CIAA to start the 1989-90 season. The team's current 10-game win streak is the longest in the D-I era and the best since winning 14 straight during the 1994-95 season. The 10-game streak also ranks tied for sixth in the nation for the longest current win streak (through games of Feb. 16).
Catching Fire: A nine-point effort against Delaware State broke an 11-game streak for
Pendarvis Williams in which he scored in double figures. Nevertheless, he's scored in double figures in 12 of the last 13, and in the last six games alone he is averaging 17.8 points, 5.2 boards and 1.8 assists while shooting 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field and 50 percent (15-of-30) from 3-point range. He's also averaging 15.1 points in conference games.
Good Weekend to be a Spartan: The NSU men and women swept Delaware State and UMES on Feb. 9 and 11, the first time both teams defeated the same two MEAC opponents in a row since Dec. 2, 2006 against Hampton and Jan. 3, 2007 at UMES. The last time both NSU basketball programs swept a weekend series occurred Jan. 8-10, 2005 at South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T. The last time they accomplished that at home? That was 10 years ago on Jan. 11-13, 2003 against Coppin State and Morgan State.
Stepping Up: Coming up big lately have been
Malcolm Hawkins and
Brandon Goode. Hawkins has scored in double figures in nine of the last 11 games and has tallied 15.5 points on 23-of-48 field goals (47.9 percent), including 6-of-15 attempts from 3-point range (40.0 percent), with 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists over the last four games. Goode is averaging 12.0 points on 36-of-56 shooting (64.3 percent) with 7.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in his last eight games. He has posted two straight double-doubles.
Solid 3-Point Defense: The Spartans have held eight of their last nine opponents to 33.3 percent shooting or worse from 3-point range. Collectively, opponents are hitting 36-of-138 (26.1 percent) during that time. On the season, NSU rankes 45th in the nation in 3-point field goal defense at 30.5 percent.
Big Win, Big Offense: NSU's 22-point victory over UMES on Feb. 9 marked the largest margin of victory in a conference game since winning by 23 over South Caroilna State on Jan. 24, 2011. Combined with the 18-point win over Delaware State the game before, it marked the first time NSU recorded back-to-back conference wins by at least 18 points since defeating UMES and South Carolina State by 19 and 26 points, respectively, on Jan. 21 and 26, 2008.
The team's 85 points against UMES on Jan. 11 tied its season high against St. Francis Brooklyn on Nov. 29 (85-79 win). In the previous three seasons, NSU had only topped 85 points in a regulation contest twice, an 86-65 win over Florida A&M on Jan. 10, 2011, and of course the 86-84 victory against Missouri in last year's NCAA tournament.
NSU also has had 30 field goals in each of the last two games. The last time NSU did that was in a pair of wins at Morgan State (in two overtimes) and Coppin State in Jan. 2012. The Spartans have not hit 30 field goals in back-to-back regulation games since Feb. 2011 at UMES and at Delaware State.
Taking Care of the Ball: Just three in the last 14 games has NSU committed more turnovers than its opponent. In the last 10 games alone since Navy, NSU has outscored opponents by a 191-130 margin in points off turnovers, topping 18 points in eight of those 10 games.
The MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: Several players stand in the top 5 in the MEAC statistics, including
Brandon Goode and
Pendarvis Williams. Goode ranks first in field goal percentage (61.2), while Williams sits second in free throw percentage at 85.2, tied for third in 3-point field goals per game (2.0) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (37.5).
Jamel Fuentes ranks third in assists (5.5) and fourth in steals (1.9) and assist-turnover ratio (1.9). Fuentes also sits 34th in the nation in assists per game. Rashid Gaston ranks tied for fourth in offensive rebounds (2.8).
As a team, the Spartans rank second in 3-point field goal percentage (32.6) and third in scoring offense (67.5), scoring margin (+0.5), field goal percentage (42.1), rebounding (36.2), defensive rebounds (23.5) and assist-turnover ratio (0.9)
O'Quinn's NBA Season: Selected with the 49th overall pick in the Draft by the Orlando Magic,
Kyle O'Quinn made his NBA debut on Nov. 2 against the Denver Nuggets, grabbing one rebound in a little more than three minutes of action. He scored his first career points two days later against the Phoenix Suns with a pair of free throws.
He's tallied 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in his last seven games. On the season he's averaging 3.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game while shooting 41-of-76 (53.9 percent) from the field and 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) from the free throw line.
