Delaware State Downs NSU, 58-48

DOVER, Del. – Junior Aivah Parham tallied 15 points and eight rebounds but it was not enough as the Norfolk State women's basketball team fell to Delaware State, 58-48, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall. The Spartans have not won a road game all season.

NSU fell to 3-10 in the MEAC and 5-19 overall while the Lady Hornets improved to 6-6 in the conference and 9-16 overall.

The Spartans got on the board first with a layup by junior forward Rachel Gordon with 19:47 left before halftime.

A jumper by Tierra Hawkins with 14:24 remaining in the first half capped a 10-4 run to give the Lady Hornets a 10-6 lead over NSU.

Senior guard Recca Trice nailed a 3-pointer with 14:05 to go in the first half, which sparked a 10-2 run that ended with a jumper by sophomore Quineshia Leonard, as the Spartans claimed a 16-12 lead over DSU with 9:41 remaining before halftime. Trice shot 66.7 (2-of-3) percent from behind the arc on the afternoon.

The Lady Hornets answered with a 10-4 run as Uchechi Ahaiwe made a jumper with 1:25 left in the first half to take the lead over NSU, 22-20.

Leonard scored the Spartans final field-goal of the half as she made a jumper as time expired to send NSU and DSU into halftime tied at 22.

Hawkins scored the first field-goal of the second half with 17:49 left in the game as Delaware State continued to keep the game tied at 24.

NSU outscored DSU, 12-8 in the paint as sophomore Jazamine Gray made a layup to give the Spartans a 30-27 lead over the Lady Hornets with 13:45 remaining in the second half.

Delaware State responded on the other end as Kianna D'Oliveira nailed a jumper with 9:30 to go as the Lady Hornets continued to lead, 42-32.

The Spartans kept fighting and cut the Delaware State lead to six with a pair of back-to-back jumpers from Parham and Gordon with 8:39 remaining. NSU trailed 42-36.

Deanna Harmon made a layup with 5:28 left to give the Lady Hornets a 46-36 lead over NSU.

NSU answered with a layup by Gray at the other end with 3:07 on the clock, but Delaware State continued to lead, 48-41.

The Lady Hornets led by as many as 11 points as Jade Washington scored the last field-goal for DSU as she made a jumper with 1:51 left in the game to make the score 52-41.

Parham scored the last points for the Spartans as she drained a jumper with 31 seconds left, but they continued to trail, 55-48.

DSU shot 34.0 (18-of-53) percent on the afternoon. Bristow was the only Lady Hornet to score in double-figures and she led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkins added nine points and three rebounds, respectively.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 32.8 (19-of-58) percent from the field. Parham led NSU with 15 points and eight rebounds. Aside from Parham, two other Spartans finished the game scoring in double-figures including Gordon, who posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Trice added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists, respectively.

NSU outrebounded Delaware State 43-39 while Delaware State outscored the Spartans off turnovers, 24-8.

The Spartans will play their final three games of the regular season at home beginning with a contest against Bethune-Cookman on March 2. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
