Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Monmouth allowed just one hit in 10 innings of work to shut down the Norfolk State softball team in a pair of victories, 10-0 and 11-0, Sunday in the Spartan Clash at the NSU Softball Field.
Lauren Sulick struck out six and walked just two in five innings of work in the first game of the day, no-hitting the Spartans along the way. In the fourth and last game of the day, Cerissa Rivera gave up a first-inning double to junior
Melina Valles but struck out five and did not allow any other Spartan runners.
NSU also did itself in with eight errors on the day, while the Hawks pounded out 19 hits over the two games. Kate Kuzma did a good amount of the damage, going 2-for-3 on the day with two runs and seven RBI.
In the first game, Monmouth (3-0) scored two in the first inning after NSU starter
Jamie Schulle had trouble finding the plate early on. The Hawks added one more in the fourth and broke the game open in the fifth.
A fielding error on the Spartans (1-3) allowed the first run to score, and then Kuzma launched a three-run home run over the center field fence to make it 7-0. The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs, and Kayla Weiser brought home two more with a shot back up the middle.
Then in the second game, the Hawks immediately scored seven in the first inning. Kaitie Schumacher hit an RBI double, and after Weiser's single scored another, Kuzma launched a grand slam over the left field fence to break the game open.
Monmouth scored one more in the second and then three in the fourth for the final runs of the night.
Only two of the 11 runs in the game were earned.
In the other games on the day, Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Delaware State, 4-2, and Monmouth downed Delaware State, 5-1.
