Sowa Helps Rider Prevail 2-0 in Pitchers’ Duel with NSU

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. – Adam Wayman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Kurt Sowa pitched seven shutout innings to help Rider top Norfolk State 2-0 on Monday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field in the rubber game of the teams' three-game set.

The Broncs (2-1) outhit NSU (2-4) by an 8-4 margin.

Sowa allowed three hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out just one, but was rarely threatened. Jerry Mulderig pitched a scoreless eighth and Zach Mawson tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.

Sowa and NSU starter Jeff Di Fulgo matched each other zero for zero through four innings. Sowa worked several quick innings early, while Di Fulgo had to get out of jams with two runners on base in each of the first three innings.

Di Fulgo got a no-decision, leaving after four scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out a career-high six hitters.

Rider broke through in the fifth off Spartan reliever Chris Horne. Catcher Eric Strano led off with a single and Wayman doubled him home with the game's first run.

The Spartans had a chance to tie the game off Sowa in the seventh, as Tyon Ore and Cody Ellis hit back-to-back singles with two outs to put runners on the corners. But Sowa coaxed Robert Reaume into a flyout to end the threat.

Rider tacked on an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Ray Morton. James Locklear reached on an infield single with one out. He stole second and then also swiped third despite being momentarily picked off. Locklear then scored on a fielder's choice grounder hit by Nick Crescenzo.

Justin Thomas added a 2-for-5 day for Rider. Ellis was 2-for-4 for NSU, his third straight multi-hit game.

The Spartans play Saturday and Sunday in a three-team round-robin event against Fairleigh Dickinson and host Savannah State in Savannah, Ga.
