Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team rebounded from a tough first day of play in the Spartan Clash with a 5-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday afternoon during the second day of the tournament at the NSU Softball Field.
The Spartans were the benefactor of six errors on the Knights which led to four of the five runs being marked as unearned. NSU improved to 2-3 on the season, while FDU dropped to 2-1 after its opening weekend of the season.
NSU scored a run in each of the first three innings and then two more in the fourth while pounding out nine hits, a day after posting just one hit over two games in a pair of shutout losses against Monmouth.
Junior
Jamie Schulle (2-2) struck out seven and allowed just one earned run on four hits in all seven innings for the victory.
Sophomore
Alina Moriarty and freshman
Heather Dunning each scored two runs for the Spartans. Moriarty plated the first run of the game in the top of the first – NSU was the visiting team for the game – after doubling to lead off the game. She went to third on junior
Morgan Boyd's bunt single and then came home when Boyd stole second and the throw went into center field.
Back-to-back errors on FDU in the second plated another run when center fielder Julia Northcutt was unable to bring in Moriarty's deep shot to right center, scoring Dunning in the process. Then with two outs in the third inning, Schulle got hit by a pitch and senior
Gipsy Ramirez chopped one over the third baseman's head. Junior
Kathy Cortez hit a double to the right-center field wall for a 3-0 lead.
NSU finished the scoring in the fourth with two more runs. Dunning poked one into right field and scored when third baseman Angelique Nieves threw the ball into right-center field on a hit by Moriarty. Boyd got on base with a bunt single and stole second, and just like the first inning, Moriarty touched the plate when the throw down to second got away from FDU.
Samantha Lemm (0-1) took the loss for the Knights, allowed five hits and four runs, one earned, in three innings of work.
Boyd had two hits, while Ramirez went 3-for-4.
Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Delaware State 9-1 earlier in the day in the only other contest on Monday.
NSU will host Delaware on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and then Marist, Army and Delaware on Saturday and Sunday for the Spartan Classic.
