NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Daniel Grauel defeated Jiri Stiburek, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), to help the Norfolk State men's tennis team pick up its third consecutive win of the season with a 4-3 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. This was S.C. State's first regular season conference loss since March 27, 2010, when the Bulldogs lost to FAMU.
NSU improved to 1-0 in the MEAC and 3-3 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-1 in the conference and 0-1 on the season.
With the match tied at 3-all, Grauel fought off three match points in the third set of his matchup with Stiburek at No. 5 singles, helping the Spartans edge the five-time defending MEAC men's champion Bulldogs.
The Spartans went 0-2 in the doubles matches as junior Peter Rastromer-Pello and freshman Dzmitry Zyhmantovich led off with an 8-6 loss to Peteris Vinogradous and Marius Dragoi. Artemiy Nikitin and Anton Protsenko defeated sophomore Igor Braga and freshman Robin Riethmueller, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot. S.C. State clinched the doubles point so the No. 3 match that featured Tomas Bizon and Stiburek for S.C. State and Grauel and freshman Samuel Lemberger was abandoned at 6-6.
Zyhmantovich competed at the No. 1 position where he defeated Vinograduous, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 2 spot, Braga posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Bizon. Riethmueller claimed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Protsenko in the No. 3 slot. At the No. 4 position, Ramstromer-Pello suffered a 3-6, 1-6 loss to Nikitin. Lemberger rounded out the singles matches for NSU with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 loss to Dragoi.
The Spartans return to the courts on Feb. 16 when they take on Liberty at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va. Play will begin at 2 p.m.
