Kyriacou, Day Lead Spartans to 1st Series Win

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. Chase Kyriacou drove in a career-high three runs and Cameron Day launched a two-run home run to propel Norfolk State to a 7-3 win over Wagner on Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field, clinching the Spartans' first series victory of the year.

NSU improved to 5-9 with the win, while Wagner dropped to 2-8.

Kyriacou knocked in three runs in the first four innings to help NSU start quickly, then Day helped finish off the victory with the team's first homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning.

NSU scored five runs in the first four innings Sunday to get out to a big early lead. In the first, Kyriacou drew a one-out walk, and Day followed with a single. One out later, Tyon Ore also drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman third baseman Kyle Vaas followed with a single over the shortstop's head into left field, plating Kyriacou and Day with the game's first runs.

The Spartans manufactured a run in the second. With two outs, Mikey Bruno walked, then promptly stole second base. Kyriacou followed with an opposite-field single to make it 3-0.

Kyriacou stayed hot in the fourth, smashing a two-run double off the wall in left field to give NSU a 5-0 edge.

Wagner closed the gap to 5-2 in the fifth. Ben Ruta walked to lead off the frame, then went to second when Chase Gray reached on a Spartan error. After a fielder's choice, Ruta scored on another NSU miscue to get the Seahawks on the board. Shaun Flynn followed with a run-scoring double to cut the Spartans' lead to 5-2.

The Seahawks tacked on another run in the top of the sixth. Tommy Mazurkiewicz reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when NSU threw away Ian Miller's infield single.

But NSU pulled away in the eighth. Kyriacou walked with two outs off Wagner reliever Steven Bloodworth. Day followed with a long at-bat against the Seahawks' right hander, fouling off six pitches. On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Day lofted a shot to deep left that cleared the wall for the team's first round-tripper of the year.

Troy Applin pitched scoreless ball over the final two frames to earn his first save of the season. He allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out one. Justin Bhatti (1-3) pitched six strong innings, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs to earn the victory. He walked two and struck out none. All three runs Wagner scored Sunday off NSU pitching were unearned.

Kyriacou was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Day went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two batted in, while Vaas also had two RBI.

NSU travels to Farmville, Va., for a 4 p.m. game at Longwood on Wednesday.
