Spartan Baseball Drops 17-4 Decision at Longwood

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – Kyri Washingon and Kenny Cassidy both knocked in four runs, while Blake Ream and Alex Owens both homered to lead Longwood to a 17-4 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday afternoon at Bolding Stadium.

The Spartans (5-10) dropped to 0-5 away from home this season with the loss, while the Lancers improved to 8-8 overall. The 17 runs and 20 hits by Longwood are both the most by an NSU opponent this season.

Cassidy hit a two-run double in a three-run Longwood second inning, and Washington followed suit with one of his own in a three-run Lancer uprising in the third. All those runs came off NSU pitcher Cooper Jones (0-1), who was making his first start of the season.

NSU got its first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Kyle Vaas in the fourth, but the Lancers answered back with a two-run double by Brandon Delk in the fifth and the Lancers were never seriously threatened.

The Spartans' biggest highlight of the day came in seventh on a three-run homer by Chase Kyriacou, which cut the Lancers' lead to 9-4. The junior's first homer of the year scored Justin Lee, who had walked, and Mikey Bruno, who singled.

But Longwood scored three in the bottom of the seventh and five more in the eighth. Both Lancer home runs came in the eighth, with Owens belting a solo shot and Ream a two-run blast.

Cassidy was 4-for-4, while Owens, Washington and Delk all had three hits for the Lancers.

Junior first baseman Zach Markel was 2-for-5, his fifth multi-hit game of the season, for NSU. He was the only Spartan with more than one hit.

Joe Manion (1-2) allowed just one run in six innings while striking out six for Longwood. Jones (0-1) yielded seven runs (six earned) in four innings for the Spartans.

NSU opens MEAC play this weekend when it hosts reigning MEAC Northern Division champion Delaware State for a three-game series. The teams play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field.
